The Difference between Firewall and Antivirus

July 17, 2017

Are you using both firewall and antivirus?  They seem to do very similar things protecting your computer and network security.  However, both provide security in very different and necessary ways.

A firewall monitors what goes in and out of the network.  Suspicious traffic is stopped from entering or leaving by the firewall.  Think of your firewall as a gatekeeper.  The gatekeeper can be software or hardware.  Most routers, installed between the internet and the rest of the network, serves as hardware protection regardless of software applications.  Windows firewall is applicable on most computers which provides an easy firewall software solution.

A second layer of necessary protection.   Antivirus is software that tracks down malicious data that it knows about.  The guard.  Regular antivirus updates are crucial – keeping the guard in the know.  New attacks come out every day, if your antivirus is not up to date, your guard is down.

More layers, more protection.
